Copenhagen in May: Lilacs, 15-Hour Days and the Best-Value Summer Month

Copenhagen in May: 15 to 17 hours of daylight, less rain than any summer month, Tivoli open and hotel rooms about 11 per cent cheaper than June. Weather, holidays, events and what to wear.

On 1 May the sun sets over Copenhagen at 20:46. On the 31st it sets at 21:40, and somewhere in between the lilac comes out over allotment fences all across the city, Tivoli’s Friday concerts start up again and the café tables creep back onto the pavements. Copenhagen in May gets as much sunshine as June or July, less rain than either, and hotel rooms that in both 2025 and 2026 cost 11 to 12 per cent less than June’s. It is the month we would pick if we could only pick one.

Below: May’s weather and what to wear, the light, the two holidays that shut the shops in 2027, what is on, what is worth your time and what is not, and what the month costs. Dates are for May 2027. Prices and opening details were checked in September 2026, so treat them as the right order of magnitude and check the operator’s own site before you go.

May Weather: Summer Afternoons, April Evenings

The averages are a high of 16°C and a low of 7°C, and the nine degrees between them are the whole story. A sunny afternoon on a sheltered bench in Kongens Have feels like summer. The same evening on the harbour front, with the breeze coming in off the water, feels like April. Copenhageners dress for the evening, not the afternoon, and so should you.

What May does better than the summer months is stay dry. It gets about eight hours of sunshine a day, the same as June and July, and around 43 mm of rain over roughly eleven days, against 54 mm in June and 70 mm in July. Rain, when it comes, is more often a passing shower than a lost day. The month also warms as it goes, so the last week of May is a noticeably different trip from the first.

The water has not caught up. The harbour baths are open, but the harbour is still cold, and the lifeguards at Islands Brygge do not start until 1 June. In May the people in the water are mostly the winter bathers who never got out. The full numbers for every month are in our Copenhagen weather guide.

The Light: Fifteen Hours Becoming Seventeen

Copenhagen gains an hour and three-quarters of daylight across May, and the numbers undersell it. From 5 May the sun never sinks far enough below the horizon for true astronomical night, and it will not again until 7 August. By the end of the month the sky over the harbour at midnight is a deep blue rather than black, and the northern horizon never quite lets go of the light.

The practical consequence is that the best hour of the day moves to the evening. Between eight and half past nine the low sun turns the lakes gold, and Dronning Louises Bro, the bridge between the city centre and Nørrebro, fills with people sitting along the railings with a beer from the corner shop. It is free, it is where Copenhageners actually go on a warm May evening, and it beats any terrace in Nyhavn, where the same beer costs 75 to 110 DKK.

Two Holidays That Close the Shops in May 2027

Denmark has two public holidays in May 2027. On both, most shops close, while restaurants, Tivoli and the big attractions generally carry on.

  • Ascension Day (Kristi Himmelfartsdag), Thursday 6 May. A full public holiday, and many Danes take the Friday off as well and make a long weekend of it. Do your shopping on the Wednesday.
  • Whitsun (Pinse), Sunday 16 and Monday 17 May. Whit Monday is the one that catches visitors out. It looks like an ordinary Monday on the calendar, and most shops are shut.

If an older guide lists Great Prayer Day, Store Bededag, in late April or May, ignore it. Denmark abolished it as a public holiday from 2024, and that Friday is now an ordinary working day.

May Day, which falls on a Saturday in 2027, is not a public holiday at all. It is, however, the day the labour movement takes over Fælledparken in Østerbro for speeches, music and beer tents, and it draws a big, good-natured crowd. You do not need to agree with the speeches to enjoy the beer.

Turn of the monthDistortion3–7 June in 2026; 2027 dates not yet announced

Two notes. The marathon route runs through the centre past most of the landmarks you came to see, so on the morning of the 9th buses divert and crossing the course takes patience. Stand on a corner with a coffee and it becomes the event rather than the obstacle. And if Distortion lands in the last days of May in 2027, as it has before, Nørrebro and Vesterbro turn into a five-day street party. Brilliant if you want it; a reason to book a hotel well away from it if you do not.

Things to Do in Copenhagen in May

May is the first month when everything is open and the city lives outdoors. These are the things that are better now than at any other time of year, and one that is not.

Walk the beech woods of Dyrehaven

Danes have a phrase for the week in early May when the beech trees come into leaf: bøgen springer ud, the beech bursts out. There is no better place to see it than Jægersborg Dyrehave, the old royal deer park north of the city. The new leaves are a green you will not see at any other time of year, the deer graze the open plains, and Bakken, the world’s oldest amusement park, sits on the edge of the woods with free entry. Take the S-train’s C line to Klampenborg and walk in from the station.

Tivoli, with the evenings to match

Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen with blooming tulips, a carousel and vintage rides — Copenhagen's fairy-tale amusement park since 1843
Tivoli’s spring planting, with tulips for the opening weeks of the summer season

Tivoli has been open since 19 March, but May is when it starts to make sense after dark. The Friday Rock concerts on the big lawn usually start in early May, the gardens are freshly planted, and the park stays open late enough to see the lights come on even as sunset slips past nine. Adult entry is 200 DKK, rides are extra, and Friday restaurant tables need booking well ahead. Our Tivoli guide has the full breakdown.

Walk the ramparts of Kastellet

The star-shaped fortress by the harbour is free, its grassy ramparts are at their greenest in May, and half an hour is enough for a lap of the top, with views over the moat to St Alban’s Church. The Little Mermaid is just beyond the northern tip. Get there before half past nine and you will have her almost to yourself; the tour buses start arriving soon after.

Eat outside at Reffen, drink on a roof

Reffen, the street-food yard on Refshæleøen, runs from April to October, and May is the first month you can reasonably count on sitting outside at it. Take the harbour bus rather than the metro; the ride up the harbour is half the point. Our Refshæleøen guide covers the rest of the island. For a drink with a view, the seasonal rooftop terraces are open again, and our rooftop bar guide says which ones take walk-ins.

Look for lilac, and take a day trip

Lilac arrives in the last fortnight of May, and Danish gardens are full of it

The lilac follows the horse chestnuts in the last fortnight of May. The best of it is not in a park at all but in the kolonihaver, the allotment gardens with their little painted huts, where a lilac hedge is practically compulsory. You will smell them before you see them.

With seventeen hours of light by the end of the month, a day trip no longer costs you your evening. Louisiana’s sculpture park on the Øresund coast is at its best between the new leaves and the summer crowds, and Kronborg is a few stops further up the same coastal line.

Skip: the harbour swim

The ladders stay in all year. In May, the people using them are mostly the winter bathers.

The one classic Copenhagen summer experience that May cannot deliver is a swim in the harbour. The baths are open, but the lifeguards at Islands Brygge start on 1 June and the water is still cold enough to make your chest tighten. Winter bathers love it. Everyone else should do what most locals do in May: book an hour in one of the harbour saunas, dip for ten seconds, and call it a swim.

What to Wear in Copenhagen in May

Pack for a nine-degree swing and a sea breeze. The Danish uniform for May is a light jacket over a jumper, with a scarf in the bag for later.

  • A windproof, showerproof jacket. Eleven wet days means you will probably meet a shower, and the wind off the harbour does more damage than the temperature.
  • A warm layer for the evenings, a jumper or a thin down jacket. At 7°C by the water at ten at night, a T-shirt under a trench coat is not enough.
  • Sunglasses. Eight hours of sunshine a day and a sun that stays low all evening means you will use them more than the umbrella.
  • Walking shoes with some grip. You will cover more ground than you expect in daylight this long, much of it on cobbles.
  • Swimwear only if you plan a harbour sauna. Leave the winter coat at home.

The full list, season by season, is in our Copenhagen packing guide.

What May Costs

May is not a cheap month; it is a well-priced one. Statistics Denmark’s hotel price index, where the 2025 average is 100, puts it below June in every recent year:

YearMayJuneJulyAugust
2024101.4121.397.5108.0
2025101.8114.2107.3107.3
2026111.9127.8111.2114.4

So May rooms came in 11 to 12 per cent under June in 2025 and 2026, and 16 per cent under in 2024. They were below August every year and roughly level with July: cheaper in 2025, a little dearer in 2024, level in 2026. The tiebreaker is the airfare. From London and most of Europe, July is the most expensive month of the year to fly to Copenhagen, and May is not. Our guide to the cheapest time to visit Copenhagen has the month-by-month numbers.

Everything else costs what it costs all year. A draught beer is still around 60 DKK and a smørrebrød lunch still adds up, and our breakdown of what things really cost prices it all. Book early for the marathon weekend of 8 and 9 May, and for Distortion if it lands in May.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is May a good time to visit Copenhagen?

It is one of the best. Everything is open, the days run from 15 to 17 hours, it rains less than in any summer month, and hotel rooms cost 11 to 12 per cent less than in June. The one thing it cannot give you is warm water for a harbour swim.

What is the weather like in Copenhagen in May?

Average highs of 16°C and lows of 7°C, about eight hours of sunshine a day and around 43 mm of rain over roughly eleven days. Afternoons in the sun feel like summer; evenings by the water feel much cooler.

What should I wear in Copenhagen in May?

Layers: a light windproof jacket, a jumper or thin down layer for the evening, comfortable walking shoes and sunglasses. A heavy winter coat is overkill, and a T-shirt alone after dark is not enough.

Is Tivoli open in May?

Yes. The 2027 summer season runs from 30 March to 26 September, and the Friday Rock concerts usually start in early May.

Are shops open on the May public holidays?

Mostly not. On Ascension Day, 6 May 2027, and Whit Monday, 17 May 2027, most shops close, though restaurants and the major attractions generally open. May Day, 1 May, is not a public holiday.

Can you swim in Copenhagen in May?

You can, but the water is cold and the lifeguarded season at the harbour baths does not start until 1 June. May swimming is for winter bathers; most visitors are happier with a harbour sauna and a quick dip.

Is Copenhagen crowded in May?

Busier than April, calmer than July and August. The busiest days are sunny weekends and the marathon weekend, and the landmarks are quietest before ten in the morning.

If your dates slip into June, the light keeps growing and so do the prices: June has been the most expensive month for Copenhagen hotels four years running. Our guide to Copenhagen in June covers Distortion, 3 Days of Design, Sankt Hans and the first lifeguarded harbour swims.

Final Thoughts

There is a version of Copenhagen most visitors never see because they come in July: the city before it fills up, when the light holds until ten, the terraces are full of Danes rather than tour groups, and you can still get a table on a Friday without planning your trip around it. That is May, and it asks remarkably little of you in return — a jumper for the evenings, a bit of patience on Whit Monday, and the good sense to leave the swimming until June.

Come in the first half for the beech woods and the quieter streets; come in the second for the lilac and the warmth. Either way, find a spot on Dronning Louises Bro at about nine and watch the city refuse to go to bed.
