By the first week of August the harbour has had three months of long days on it, and the water off Islands Brygge is as warm as it will get all year. Office workers swim at lunchtime, teenagers queue for the diving tower, and the quayside fills after work with people who have brought a towel, a few cold beers and no intention of going indoors. That is Copenhagen in August at its best: the summer city at full stretch, with Pride, a food festival and, in 2027, a partial eclipse of the sun to fill the calendar.
This guide covers the weather and the fast-shrinking evenings, swimming, Copenhagen Pride, the late-August food calendar, the eclipse and the Perseid meteor shower, what crowds and hotel prices really do, and how early August differs from late. Dates are for 2027. Prices and opening details were checked in October 2026, so treat them as the right order of magnitude and confirm anything you are building a trip around.

August Weather: Warm, Bright and Sometimes Very Wet
On paper August is July’s twin: highs around 21°C, lows around 13°C. Hot spells happen, and a few days above 30°C are no longer unusual in a Danish summer, but plan for low twenties with a breeze off the water that makes the evenings cooler than the afternoon suggests.
The rain is the thing to understand. An average August brings about 62 mm, a little less than July’s 70, but it rarely arrives as polite drizzle. It comes in short, heavy showers and the odd thunderstorm, often after a warm, sticky morning, and then clears as quickly as it came. Copenhagen has a word for the extreme version, skybrud, a cloudburst, and the July 2011 one flooded so many cellars that the city redesigned parks and squares to hold storm water. You are unlikely to see anything like it. You are quite likely to spend half an hour under an awning.

The evenings are shrinking fast
| Date | Sunrise | Sunset | Daylight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 August | 05:14 | 21:16 | 16h 01m |
| 15 August | 05:41 | 20:46 | 15h 05m |
| 31 August | 06:12 | 20:06 | 13h 55m |
That is more than two hours of daylight gone in a month, about four minutes a day, and you feel it. Sunset stays after 21:00 until 8 August and is past 20:30 until about the 20th; by the last week, dinner on a terrace ends in the dark. The other side of it is that the nights come back. On 8 August 2027 the sun sinks far enough below the horizon for true astronomical night for the first time since early May, which matters for the meteor shower below.
The Harbour at Its Warmest

Water warms much more slowly than air, so the harbour and the Øresund peak in August, typically in the high teens Celsius and warmer still after a run of sunny days. If you have ever wanted to swim in a capital city’s harbour, this is the month to do it.
Islands Brygge is the famous harbour bath: free, open all year from 06:00 to 22:00, with lifeguards on duty from 10:00 to 18:00 until 31 August, when the summer staffing ends. It is also the busiest, and on a hot weekend afternoon the pools and the lawn behind them are packed. Go before 11:00, or after 19:00 when the light turns gold and the families have gone home.
Islands Brygge is not the only option, and on a hot weekend not the best one. Our ranking of the Copenhagen harbour baths covers every official swimming spot, from Sandkaj in Nordhavn to the quiet bath at Sluseholmen.
Two things catch visitors out. The first is that the harbour baths close after heavy rain, when storm drains overflow into the harbour, and August’s downpours are exactly the kind that trigger it. Check the city’s bathing water forecast (search badevand København) on the day; a red flag means stay out. The second is that the harbour is a working waterway, so swim only at the marked baths and jetties. For sand rather than concrete, Amager Strandpark is a few minutes from the centre on the M2 metro, and Bellevue in Klampenborg is a short S-train ride north. Our Copenhagen summer guide covers the wider season, and the harbour baths feature among the best free things to do in Copenhagen.
Our ranking of the best beaches near Copenhagen covers seven more, from the quiet seven-kilometre strand of Køge Bugt to the north-coast village beaches at Hornbæk and Tisvildeleje.
For every other way to spend a warm day outside, from Kastellet’s ramparts to the deer park at Klampenborg, see our guide to outdoor Copenhagen.
Copenhagen Pride, 14–22 August 2027

Copenhagen Pride is listed for 14 to 22 August 2027. The week normally follows a set pattern: a free stage and programme on City Hall Square, renamed Pride Square for the duration, events in bars, venues and museums across the city, and the parade on the final Saturday, which points to 21 August this time. It has traditionally set off from Frederiksberg’s town hall and wound through the city to finish at Pride Square. Treat the exact dates and route as provisional until copenhagenpride.dk publishes the 2027 programme.
For a visitor, the practical point is that Pride is not a side event. It is one of the biggest street occasions of the Copenhagen year, the centre turns rainbow for a week, and hotels near Rådhuspladsen fill early for the parade weekend. If your dates overlap it, book as soon as you can. Our Copenhagen Pride guide has the route, where to watch and what happens on Pride Square, and the LGBTQ+ Copenhagen guide covers the city’s queer scene for the other fifty-one weeks.
Copenhagen Cooking and the Late-August Food Calendar

Copenhagen Cooking, the city’s big food festival, takes over the last ten days or so of August. The 2026 edition ran from 21 to 30 August with more than a hundred events, from free tastings to dinners at serious restaurants. Check the festival’s own site for the 2027 dates before you book anything around it. Our Copenhagen Cooking guide explains how the programme works and which events sell out.
Around it, late summer is simply a good time to eat outdoors. Reffen, the street food market on Refshaleøen, is open until October and at its best on a warm August evening, and our street food guide covers it alongside the year-round food halls. Kulturhavn, the city’s free harbour festival, has in recent years run over a couple of days near the end of the month, with performances and activities along the water. And the cheapest late-summer lunch in town is still a Danish hot dog from a wagon, eaten standing up in the sun.
A Partial Eclipse and the Perseids: August 2027’s Sky
Two things happen overhead in August 2027 that are worth planning a morning and a late night around, and almost nobody writing about Copenhagen has noticed either.
Monday 2 August: a partial solar eclipse
The total solar eclipse of 2 August 2027 is one of the great ones of the century, with totality across southern Spain and North Africa. Copenhagen is well outside the path, but it gets a partial eclipse. By our calculation the Moon starts to cover the Sun at about 10:20, takes a bite of roughly a quarter of its disc at about 11:15, and has moved clear by about 12:05. The daylight will barely change, so you would not notice it by accident. With the Sun high in the south-east it is easy to watch from anywhere with an open view, from the harbour to the ramparts of Kastellet, but only through proper eclipse glasses. Buy a pair before you travel; they are much harder to find in the week itself.
12–13 August: the Perseids under dark skies

The Perseid meteor shower peaks every year around 12 and 13 August, and 2027 is a better year than most for watching it from Denmark. Astronomical night has returned four days earlier, and the Moon, three-quarters full, sets at about 00:40, leaving the small hours properly dark. Those hours after midnight are the best for meteors anyway.
You will not see much from a lit street in the centre. Get to somewhere open and darker, such as the beach at Amager Strandpark or the wide, unlit commons of Amager Fælled, give your eyes twenty minutes to adjust without looking at your phone, and look up and roughly north-east. A clear night can bring several meteors a minute at the peak.
Crowds and Prices: August Is Not the Cheap End of Summer
August is high season, and the hotel numbers say so more bluntly than most guides do. On Statistics Denmark’s national hotel price index, June is the dearest month every year, but August has been level with or above July in each of the last four: 106.9 against 103.4 in 2023, 108.0 against 97.5 in 2024, level at 107.3 in 2025, and 114.4 against 111.2 in 2026. The idea that prices ease off as the summer winds down does not hold here until September at the earliest, and in 2025 September was dearer still.
What does change is who is in town. Copenhagen’s schools go back on Monday 9 August 2027, and the Danish families who filled Tivoli, the zoo and the harbour baths all through July largely vanish from the weekday daytime crowd. International visitors do not. So the second half of the month is noticeably calmer at family attractions on weekdays, busier around the Pride parade weekend and the food festival, and no cheaper at all for your hotel. Book as early as you would for July. If price is what matters most, our guide to the cheapest time to visit Copenhagen points you elsewhere in the calendar, and where to stay in Copenhagen helps you pick a neighbourhood once you have decided.
What Is Open, and What Is About to Close
Everything is open. August has no Danish public holidays, so shops, museums and offices keep their normal hours all month, which makes it one of the least complicated months of the year to plan.
- Tivoli is deep into its summer season, which runs to 26 September 2027, with the free Friday concerts on the open-air stage. Summer evenings are when it is at its best; our Tivoli Gardens guide has the tickets and the tactics.
- Bakken, the old amusement park in the deer park north of the city, closes for the season at the end of August. Entry is free and it is a very different experience from Tivoli; see our Bakken guide before the shutters come down.
- The lifeguards at Islands Brygge stand down after 31 August. The bath stays open, but the summer staffing ends with the month.
- Day trips are at their easiest, with long evenings for the trip back. Kronborg, Louisiana and the beaches of the north coast all work well; our day trips from Copenhagen guide ranks them.
Early August or Late August?
The month splits neatly into three, and it is worth choosing which third you want.
- 1–8 August. The Danish school holidays are still on, so the family attractions are at their busiest. In exchange you get the longest evenings of the month, with sunset after 21:00, and the eclipse on the morning of the 2nd.
- 9–20 August. Schools are back, weekdays calm down, the Perseids peak on the 12th and 13th, and Pride week begins on the 14th. Sunset is still after half past eight. If you can pick any dates in August, pick these.
- 21–31 August. The expected parade day on the 21st, the food festival if it keeps to its usual slot, the harbour festival, and the last days of Bakken and the lifeguards. The evenings are drawing in quickly, and by the end of the month a jumper is no longer optional after dark.
August Compared With July
| July | August | |
|---|---|---|
| Average high | 21°C | 21°C |
| Rainfall | About 70 mm | About 62 mm |
| Daylight, 1st of month | 17h 26m | 16h 01m |
| Daylight, end of month | 16h 05m | 13h 55m |
| Big events | Copenhagen Jazz Festival, 2–11 July 2027 | Pride, Copenhagen Cooking, the eclipse |
| Danish school holidays | All month | Until 8 August |
| Sea temperature | Warming | Warmest of the year |
| Hotel prices | High | Level with or above July |
The short version: July is Copenhagen at its loudest, with the jazz festival and every Danish family in town; August is the same summer with warmer water, darker nights and a little more room on a weekday. For how the whole year compares, see Copenhagen weather by month and our month-by-month planner.
Looking a month later instead? September is the same city with more room, cooler evenings and an earlier dusk, at much the same hotel prices. Our guide to Copenhagen in September has the details.
What to Pack
- Swimwear and a quick-drying towel. You will swim, even if you think you won’t.
- A light waterproof jacket with a hood. The showers are heavy but brief, and an umbrella is a liability in a crowd.
- A warm layer for the evenings, which cool fast by the water and arrive earlier every day.
- Sunscreen and sunglasses. The days are long and the sun reflects hard off the harbour.
- Eclipse glasses if you are in town on 2 August, bought before you travel.
- Comfortable shoes for Pride, which means a lot of standing and a lot of walking.
Our full Copenhagen packing list covers the rest, season by season.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is August a good time to visit Copenhagen?
Yes, if you want summer at full strength: warm days, the warmest harbour water of the year, Pride and a major food festival. The drawbacks are high hotel prices and heavy showers. The second and third weeks, after the Danish schools go back on 9 August 2027, are the sweet spot.
What is the weather like in Copenhagen in August?
Highs around 21°C and lows around 13°C, with about 62 mm of rain that tends to arrive in short, heavy showers. Daylight falls from about 16 hours at the start of the month to under 14 by the end.
When is Copenhagen Pride 2027?
Copenhagen Pride is listed for 14 to 22 August 2027, with the parade expected on Saturday 21 August. Confirm the programme on copenhagenpride.dk before booking around it.
Can you swim in Copenhagen in August?
Yes, and August is the best month for it. The harbour baths, such as Islands Brygge, are free, with lifeguards until 31 August. Check the city’s bathing water forecast after heavy rain, when the baths can close.
Is Copenhagen crowded in August?
It is high season, so central sights and hotels are busy all month. Family attractions are calmer on weekdays after the schools go back on 9 August, but the Pride parade weekend and the food festival draw big crowds.
Is Tivoli open in August?
Yes. Tivoli’s summer season runs from 30 March to 26 September 2027, so it is open throughout August, with free Friday evening concerts.
What is there to do in Copenhagen in August 2027?
Copenhagen Pride, the Copenhagen Cooking food festival, harbour swimming, Tivoli and Bakken, a partial solar eclipse on the morning of 2 August, and the Perseid meteor shower on the night of 12–13 August.

Final Thoughts
August is not a secret month and it is not a cheap one. What it offers instead is the summer city with everything switched on: the harbour warm enough to swim in without a gasp, the parks full until late, and a calendar with Pride, a serious food festival and, in 2027, an eclipse and a meteor shower thrown in.
Choose your week rather than just your month. The middle of August, after the schools go back and before the evenings close in, gets you almost all of it with a little more room to move. Bring a towel.
