On the last Sunday of October the clocks go back, and Copenhagen loses an hour of evening overnight. On the Saturday the sun sets at around ten to six; on the Sunday it is gone before five. That single night splits Copenhagen in October into two different trips: three and a half weeks of crisp, colourful autumn with usable evenings, and a final few days that already feel like winter. Most of what is good about the month, from Culture Night to the best of the park colour, sits in the first part.
This page covers the weather as it really is, the events worth timing a trip around, the October school holiday that fills Tivoli and Bakken, where to see the colours, what to do when it rains (it will) and whether October is actually cheap. Dates are given for the 2026 editions with pointers to where the 2027 dates will appear; prices were checked in October 2026 against the operators’ own sites, so treat them as the right order of magnitude for 2027.

The Weather: Mild, Damp and Changeable
October in Copenhagen is not cold. An average high of 12.6°C is jacket weather rather than coat weather, and the nights, at an average of 7.1°C, rarely bite. Compare that with September’s 17.5°C high and November’s 7.6°C and you can see October for what it is: the month the city slides from one season to the next.
The issue is the wet. Rain is frequent, and October’s 63.3 mm is more than November’s 56.4 mm. In practice that rarely means a washed-out day. It means a shower that blows in off the Øresund, soaks you for twenty minutes and moves on, which is why locals carry a hood rather than an umbrella. The wind is what makes an umbrella pointless on the harbour and the bridges.
Sunny spells are short in October, which sounds bleak and isn’t: the low autumn light, when it comes, is a good time for photographs of the harbour and the coloured façades. Bring sunglasses as well as a waterproof. You will want both on the same afternoon.

The Clock Change Is the Real Dividing Line
Summer time ends across the EU on the last Sunday of October: 25 October in 2026 and 31 October in 2027. Copenhagen is far enough north that the effect is dramatic. At the start of the month the sun sets at roughly ten to seven; by the evening before the change it is setting at about ten to six; the next day, about ten to five. By 31 October it is down by about twenty-five to five.
Why it matters for planning: the first three weeks give you daylight until early evening for walking, cycling and the parks, then a proper dark evening for Tivoli’s lanterns. After the change, the afternoon is short and the dark starts while you are still thinking about a late lunch. If you have the choice, come early in the month. If you can only come at the end, plan the outdoor things for the morning and save the museums, the bars and Tivoli for after four.
Tivoli Halloween: 2 October to 1 November 2026

Tivoli reopens for its Halloween season on 2 October and runs until 1 November 2026, decorated with more than 20,000 pumpkins. Halloween in Tivoli is closer to an autumn festival than a scare-fest. There are two haunted houses, which Tivoli bills as its most terrifying Halloween attractions, but most of the gardens are lanterns, straw bales and pumpkins, with the Little Ghost Train and the Witch’s Carousel for the smallest visitors. All the rides are open.
Entry for 2026 is DKK 200 for adults and DKK 100 for children, with an unlimited-ride pass at DKK 269 (DKK 134 for children). A combo ticket for the haunted houses is DKK 150 rather than the regular DKK 190. The gates open daily at 11:00; closing times vary by date, so check the calendar on tivoli.dk for your day.
Two timing tips. First, go in the afternoon and stay until dark: in early October that means staying until seven, but after the clock change the lanterns are lit by five, which suits families with small children. Second, avoid week 42 if you can (see below). Tivoli then closes from 2 November until the Christmas season opens on 13 November 2026, so a trip in the first fortnight of November finds the park shut. Our full guide to Tivoli Halloween covers the rides and the food, and Tivoli’s seasons page is where the 2027 Halloween dates will appear.
Culture Night: One Pass, One Night, the Whole City

Kulturnatten, Culture Night, is a very good reason to choose a particular October date. In 2026 it fell on Friday 9 October, from 18:00 to midnight. Around 250 organisers took part: museums, theatres, churches, libraries, government buildings and institutions that are rarely open to the public, all running events into the night.
You need a Culture Night pass. In 2026 it cost DKK 125, the same price for everyone, and it covered two children under 12 as well as free public transport across Greater Copenhagen for the evening. Physical passes were sold at 7-Eleven shops from late September. For a visitor that is outstanding value: a single evening of public transport alone would eat a chunk of the price, and the pass gets you into buildings that money otherwise cannot.
Plan it like a festival. Pick three or four places in the same part of town, start early because the popular ones queue, and eat before six or after nine. Culture Night’s own site, kulturnatten.dk, publishes the programme and publishes each year’s date. There is also a separate Family Culture Night in spring, set for 19 March 2027.
Week 42: the Autumn School Holiday
Danish schools break for a week in mid-October, the efterårsferie. In Copenhagen the guideline holiday in 2026 was week 42, 12 to 16 October (in 2025 it was 13 to 17 October). Individual schools set their own calendars, but most follow the guideline, so the whole city’s families are off at once.
The effect is felt in exactly the places a visitor with children would go. Tivoli is busier than usual. Bakken, the old amusement park in Dyrehaven north of the city, opened daily for the holiday (10 to 18 October in 2026) and then opens only for the weekend of 23 to 25 October, before closing until its Christmas market from 21 November. Entry to Bakken is free; rides are paid separately or with an all-rides wristband, DKK 349 online in 2026. Our Bakken guide has the details.
If you are travelling without children, the trick is the opposite: avoid week 42 for Tivoli and the family attractions, and use it for the restaurants, bars and adult museums. For 2027, check Copenhagen Municipality’s published holiday plan on kk.dk once it covers the 2027–28 school year.
Where to See the Autumn Colour
Copenhagen does not do blazing New England colour, but its parks turn gold and copper through October, and they are close together. Four places worth the walk:
- Kongens Have. The King’s Garden around Rosenborg Castle is the most central option and the most photogenic, with the castle’s towers above the trees. Go early on a weekday before the paths fill.
- Frederiksberg Have. The romantic landscape garden below Frederiksberg Palace, with lakes, bridges and a Chinese pavilion. It is a short walk from the Frederiksberg cafés.
- Assistens Cemetery. In Nørrebro, a working cemetery that doubles as a park, with avenues of old trees and the graves of Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard.
- Dyrehaven. The former royal deer park at Klampenborg, a short S-train ride north to Klampenborg station. Ancient oaks, open grassland and free-roaming herds of deer. Combine it with Bakken during the holiday.

One more date for the history-minded: Kastellet, the star-shaped citadel, marks its birthday each autumn. In 2026 the Danish Defence announced the celebration for 25 October; check forsvaret.dk’s Kastellet page for later years.
For the opening hours of the four colour spots above, and the parks beyond them, see our ranking of the best parks in Copenhagen. The royal gardens close at 19:00 in October, changing when the clocks go back, and 17:00 from November.
Rainy-Day Backups That Are Worth It Anyway
With rain so frequent, you need a shortlist of places you would be happy to spend an afternoon in regardless. Three that earn their place in October:
Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, in Humlebæk up the coast, is open until 22:00 Tuesday to Friday (11:00 to 18:00 at weekends, closed Monday), and adult entry is DKK 145. The late evenings matter more in October than in any other month, because you can spend the daylight hours outside and still catch the collection and the sea view after dark. Our Louisiana day trip guide covers the train.
Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is free on the last Wednesday of each month only: 28 October in 2026 and 27 October in 2027. Otherwise it is DKK 150 at the door or DKK 135 online. The palm-filled Winter Garden is about the most pleasant place in the city to sit out a downpour. More in our Glyptotek guide.
For everything else, from the aquarium to the indoor pools, our list of rainy day activities in Copenhagen is sorted by how long each one will keep you busy. And the evenings are the reason October suits a city like this: wine bars, candlelit cafés and the slow shift into hygge season. If you like a glass of something interesting, our guide to natural wine bars in Copenhagen lists which ones open on which nights.
Eat Outside While You Still Can
Reffen, the outdoor street-food market on Refshaleøen, is mainly a spring-and-summer market. In 2026 it runs an Autumn & Halloween Season from 1 October to 2 November, open every day, with Halloween decorations from 19 October. Pick a dry afternoon, dress warmly, and get there while it is still light. See our Refshaleøen guide for the harbour bus and the rest of the island.
Is October a Cheap Month?
Cheaper than September, usually, though not the cheapest of the year. Statistics Denmark’s hotel price index, which covers Denmark as a whole rather than Copenhagen alone, gives a clear pattern: in both 2024 and 2025 hotel prices dropped by around 12–13 per cent from September to October, and October came in below the year’s average. 2023 was the exception, with October priced the same as September and above average.
So the pattern is a dip, not a collapse. The hotel index shows the deepest dips later in the year; our page on the cheapest time to visit Copenhagen has the full year. Week 42 is the one to avoid if you are travelling with children, when families are out in force.
What Isn’t On in October
A few things people expect and won’t find. Golden Days, the history festival, is a September event. Tivoli’s Christmas season and the city’s Christmas markets belong to November and December; our November guide covers when they open. And the outdoor harbour-swimming culture has largely packed up for the year, apart from the hardy winter bathers. If you are still choosing between months, September has more summer left in it, and our best time to visit planner sets the whole year side by side.
What to Pack for October
- A hooded waterproof jacket. This is the one item that matters.
- A warm mid-layer, such as a fleece or thin down jacket, for evenings at Tivoli and on the water.
- Shoes that cope with wet cobbles. Smooth soles and old stone streets in the rain are a bad mix.
- A scarf and light gloves for the last week, after the clocks change.
- Sunglasses, because the low autumn sun is bright when it does appear.
Our full Copenhagen packing list covers the other seasons.

Final Thoughts
October rewards people who time it. Come in the first half and you get the colour, a still-generous evening, Tivoli lit up with pumpkins and, with a bit of luck, Culture Night. Come in week 42 with children and you will share it with the whole of Denmark; come in the same week without them and you will hardly notice. Come after the clocks change and you are planning a different, darker, cosier trip, which has its own appeal but is really the start of winter.
Whichever you choose, pack for rain and expect sunshine anyway.
