The Cheapest Time to Visit Copenhagen (And How Much You Actually Save)

February is the cheapest time to visit Copenhagen and June, not July, is the dearest. Official hotel price data by month, the cheapest month to fly, and what a winter trip really saves.

In June 2026, Danish hotel rooms cost 47 per cent more than they had in February. Same beds, same breakfast buffet, same view of the courtyard. That figure comes from Statistics Denmark’s own price index rather than a booking site’s marketing department, and it points to a slightly different answer from the one most guides give. The cheapest time to visit Copenhagen is February, with January and November close behind. The dearest is June — not July, and not August.

This page is about money only; our month-by-month guide handles weather and crowds. Below: what the official hotel index shows for every month, the cheapest month to fly from London, the rest of Europe and North America, what a February trip really saves once you count everything else, and the expensive weeks hiding inside the cheap months. Figures were checked in September 2026. Fares and room rates move daily, so treat them as the right order of magnitude, not a quote.

The Short Answer

February is the cheapest month on both halves of the bill. It had the lowest hotel prices of 2025 and has the lowest of 2026 so far, and it is the cheapest month to fly to Copenhagen from London, Dublin, Paris, Amsterdam, New York, Boston and Washington. January runs it close on rooms. November is the wild card: in 2024 it beat both of them.

Two warnings before you book the whole month. Copenhagen Fashion Week runs 1 to 5 February 2027, and a boutique hotel in the old town that week is priced for buyers and press rather than for you. Then the Danish school winter holiday takes weeks 7 and 8, 15 to 26 February, and family hotels and museums fill with Danes. The genuinely cheap window in 2027 is 6 to 12 February, and it happens to include Fastelavn on the 7th.

Hotel Prices by Month: What the Official Index Shows

Nobody publishes an average Copenhagen room rate you can trust. Statistics Denmark counts rooms sold, not what they cost, and the hotel industry’s benchmarking data is members-only. What does exist is the hotel line of the Danish consumer price index, which tracks how much the same rooms cost from one month to the next. In the table the 2025 average is 100. It covers hotels across Denmark rather than Copenhagen alone, but the capital is the country’s biggest hotel market by a distance, and the pattern matches the city’s own demand figures.

Turn the index into a price tag and it gets concrete. A room that averaged 1,000 DKK a night across 2025 cost about 843 in February that year and 1,142 in June. In 2026 the gap widened: 868 in February, 1,278 in June. That is a 47 per cent premium for the same room four months later, and it is the whole reason the month you choose matters.

One caution on April. It swung from 90.6 to 108.7 in consecutive years, which is what happens when Easter, school holidays and the odd big conference land in different weeks each spring. Treat it as a coin toss and check your actual dates.

Three Things the Usual Advice Gets Wrong

June is the most expensive month, not July or August

Every guide tells you July and August are peak season, and for crowds they are: August sells about 94 per cent more hotel rooms across the Copenhagen region than January. But rooms sold and room prices are different measures. On price, June has been the dearest month four years running, from 2023 to 2026, and July has come in cheaper than June in every one of those years — by 6 per cent in 2025, 13 per cent in 2026 and 20 per cent in 2024.

The Danish calendar explains it. June stacks the business year and the holiday season on top of each other: conferences are still running, Distortion takes over the streets in the first week, 3 Days of Design fills the showrooms, and the first holidaymakers arrive. Then in July much of Danish working life shuts down for three weeks. The conference trade disappears, and hotels that were full of delegates in June have to sell those rooms to tourists instead. That is why our July guide can call the city’s busiest holiday month its better summer deal.

September is not shoulder season

September gets sold as the clever month: summer weather, summer crowds gone, prices falling. In Copenhagen the crowds have not gone anywhere. September is the second-busiest month of the year for hotel rooms sold, ahead of both June and July, and in 2025 its price index reached 110.6, higher than July or August. Book it for the weather if you like. Do not book it to save money.

December is not the price spike you expect

Christmas-market demand is real — December sells more rooms than March — but it barely shows up in prices. December sat at the annual average in 2023 and below it in 2024 and 2025. A monthly figure cannot see individual weekends, and the Saturdays before Christmas are the obvious pressure point, so December’s value lives midweek. Our Christmas markets guide has the dates.

The Cheapest Month to Fly to Copenhagen

Flights follow a similar curve, with one twist that matters a great deal if you are crossing the Atlantic.

FromTypical returnCheapest monthDearest month
London£90–161February, ~£111July, ~£165
Dublin$194FebruaryJuly
Paris$242FebruaryJuly
Amsterdam$262FebruaryJuly
Berlin$158SeptemberJuly
New York$684February, ~$513June, ~$903
Boston$716February, ~$487June
Washington$748FebruaryJune

These are twelve-month route averages, so use them for the shape rather than the fare. Budget carriers from London dip to around £42–67 return on the right dates, and the airport transfer costs the same whatever month you land.

From Europe, July is the dearest month to fly. From North America, it is June. Put that next to the hotel index and the summer advice splits in two. An American who wants summer should come in July, which beats June on the flight and the room. A European who wants summer should look hard at May: July is the most expensive month to fly, and May’s rooms cost roughly what July’s do — a little less in 2025, a little more in 2024, level in 2026 — so the airfare decides it. The swing is also far wider across the Atlantic, at 72 to 76 per cent between the cheapest and dearest months from the US against roughly 49 per cent from London.

How Much You Actually Save

Small modern tidy hotel room — Copenhagen budget hotels feature efficient micro-rooms with smart vertical-storage design
The room is the only large line on a Copenhagen bill that changes with the season

Here is what the “go in winter and save” articles leave out. Only two things on a Copenhagen trip get cheaper in the low season: the room and the flight. Everything else costs exactly the same in February as it does in June.

CostChanges with the season?By how much
Hotel roomYesJune 47% dearer than February in 2026
Hostel dorm bedYesAbout 200–280 DKK in January to March, 300–450 in summer
FlightsYesAbout 49% from London, 72–76% from the US
Food and drinkNoA 60 DKK draught beer is 60 DKK all year
Metro, trains and busesNoSame fares all year
Museums and the Copenhagen CardNoSame prices all year

Take the mid-range budget from our trip cost breakdown: about 1,400 DKK a night for the room, and a little over 900 DKK a day for food, transport, sights and a buffer. On 2026’s index that room cost about 1,215 DKK a night in February and 1,790 in June. Over three nights, February saves you about 1,725 DKK. Over a week, about 4,000.

Add the flight and the all-in saving on a three-night trip comes to roughly 1,360 DKK, about 15 per cent, flying from London in February rather than July. From New York in February rather than June it is roughly 4,000 DKK, or 29 per cent. Real money. But it is not the half-price city that “go in winter” implies, because the smørrebrød, the beer and the Copenhagen Card do not care what month it is. The longer you stay, the bigger the room’s share of the bill and the more the calendar matters. On a two-night weekend it matters least of all.

What the Low Season Takes Away

Copenhagen's inner harbour under a flat grey winter sky with Christmas lights on the quayside
Grey is the default in winter: February is overcast or mostly cloudy about two days in three

The discount is paid for, mostly in daylight and in Tivoli.

  • Tivoli is shut from 4 January until its spring opening, and again from 2 to 12 November, between the Halloween and Christmas seasons. If the park is the reason for the trip, the cheapest months are the wrong months.
  • The days are short. A little over seven hours of daylight on 1 January and 8 hours 44 minutes on 1 February, rising to nearly eleven by the end of the month. Do the outdoor sightseeing in the middle of the day.
  • It is grey more than it is cold. February highs sit around 3°C, but the sky is flat and white for most of the month. The month-by-month weather has the numbers.
  • The city moves indoors. Café terraces, harbour swimming and long evenings on the quays belong to May to September. Winter Copenhagen is museums, bakeries, bars and candles.

None of that is a reason not to go. It is a reason to know what kind of trip you are buying. Our guides to January and February cover what is actually on, and the city’s indoor options are good enough to carry a whole winter weekend.

Expensive Weeks Hiding in the Cheap Months

A monthly index smooths out the spikes. These are the dates that can undo a cheap-season plan over the coming winter:

DatesWhat is onEffect
13 November 2026 onwards, weekendsTivoli’s Christmas season and the marketsSaturdays sell out first; midweek holds its value
1–5 February 2027Copenhagen Fashion WeekCentral boutique hotels price for the fashion industry
15–26 February 2027School winter holiday, weeks 7 and 8Danish families fill museums and family hotels
25–29 March 2027Easter: Maundy Thursday to Easter Monday are public holidaysVisitors arrive from across Europe; many shops close

A big congress at the Bella Center in Ørestad can also push rates up for a few days at any time of year. If one date looks expensive against the dates either side of it, check what is on before you blame the season.

Which Cheap Window Suits Which Trip

Ferris wheel christmas night — Tivoli's nighttime Christmas Market features 1 million lights, rides operating in winter coats, and magical atmosphere
Tivoli’s Christmas season runs from 13 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, and both months it spans have priced below the annual average
  • Price is everything: 6 to 12 February 2027. The cheapest rooms and flights of the year, between Fashion Week and the school holiday, with Fastelavn on the 7th and the Light Festival and Vinterjazz both running. Details in our February guide.
  • Cheap, with Christmas: 13 to 30 November 2026. Tivoli’s Christmas season and the markets are open, and November has priced below the annual average two years running. Before the 13th is cheaper and emptier still, but Tivoli is shut.
  • Cheap, with some light: 1 to 24 March 2027, before Easter. Rooms are still at winter levels, the days stretch from about eleven hours to thirteen, and CPH:DOX runs 10 to 21 March. See Copenhagen in March.
  • Tivoli at a discount: October. The Halloween season is on and the index sat below average in 2024 and 2025. Aim outside week 42, the Danish autumn school holiday, when the family attractions are at their busiest.
  • Summer for less: July rather than June for the room, and for the flight too if you are coming from North America. From Europe, May gives you the long evenings without July’s airfares.

Whatever you pick, the month only fixes the two big lines. The rest is habit: supermarket breakfasts, a bakery lunch, a 24-hour ticket instead of taxis, and the long list of free things to do. Our budget guide covers those, and they work in any season.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest month to visit Copenhagen?

February. It had the lowest hotel prices in Denmark’s official index in 2025 and 2026, and it is the cheapest month to fly from most of Europe and the US east coast. January is a close second, and November was the cheapest month of 2024.

What is the cheapest month to fly to Copenhagen?

February, from London, Dublin, Paris, Amsterdam, New York, Boston and Washington. From Berlin it is September. The dearest month is July from Europe and June from North America.

When is low season in Copenhagen?

Broadly January to March, plus November. Inside it, Fashion Week in early February, the school winter holiday in weeks 7 and 8 and Easter all push prices up for a few days.

Is September a cheap time to visit Copenhagen?

No. It is the second-busiest month for hotel rooms, and in 2025 its hotel prices were higher than July’s or August’s. Go for the weather, not the savings.

Is Copenhagen expensive at Christmas?

Less than you would think. December has priced at or below the annual average for three years running. The weekends before Christmas are the pressure point, so come midweek if you can.

How much cheaper is Copenhagen in winter?

A hotel room cost about a third less in February than in June in 2026. Food, drink, transport and museum tickets cost the same all year, so a whole three-night trip comes out roughly 15 to 30 per cent cheaper, depending on where you fly from.

Final Thoughts

The calendar is worth a fifth to a third of your trip, and no more. Pick February and you pay noticeably less for the room and the flight, and exactly the same for everything you do once you arrive. That is a good deal for anyone who likes a city in the dark — museums open until nine, bars lit by candles at four in the afternoon, bakeries full of cream buns — and a poor one for anyone whose picture of Copenhagen involves Tivoli, a harbour swim and a terrace beer at ten at night.

If it is the long evenings you want without the June bill, the trick is not a cheap month at all. It is the right expensive one: July if you are flying from America, May if you are flying from Europe, and June only if something specific is bringing you.
